Greylock Century: Course

The ride begins with approximately 15 miles of rolling hills before hitting the 10 mile ascent of Mount Greylock (some of the sections reach 13% grades). The descent down the north side of the mountain will keep you in the rivet (be aware, the road is new but there are still tight curves). For a few short miles the route takes you through North Adams. Main Street runs parallel on the south side of the course, but has a bit of traffic. Riding out of NA, Route 2 opens up and gets you back out in the country, and another climb. The descent on the back side of Route 2 is just amazing! As fun as it gets on a bike. After a few miles along the Derailed River the ride turns south towards East Hawley Road. Anyone that's done the ride up EHR can tell you it's the toughest climb of the ride. It's 3 miles to the top, with grades matching the steepest grade on Mount Greylock. A mile after the summit lunch is served.

After lunch, there are plenty of rolling hills that are true New England roads, that will remain in your memories for years to come. There are several more climbs to come. The course heads directly to Cummington from Plainfield and up to Worthington and over route 143. The climb to Worthington is not as tough as the first climbs, but you might find that it's just right for what lies ahead. Route 143 is a kicker of a ride. I haven't found a roller coaster that has been this much fun or that's left me this blurry eyed yet. Along the way, the final sag-wagon will be there to fuel you up for the final miles through Peru, Windsor and Dalton. The climbing doesn't stop, and the roads twist around like crazy on some of my favorite terrain in the Berkshires. Once you emerge out onto route 9, the course descends all the way home to Allendale (with an extra 9/10ths of a mile up Crane Ave. you can round off your day with 10,000 feet of climbing and 101 miles). Please come and enjoy this great tradition.

Enjoy the ride!
